Ceiling fans are a simple home improvement project. They may make your house look better and more comfortable. Do you have a ceiling light in your bedroom? It may not be too difficult to replace it with a ceiling fan. These are tips to make it easier.

Be certain that you kill power from the breaker box, not just the switch. There may still be electricity running to your ceiling box. You do not want to get shocked.

Removing the old light is simple. Next task is to wire the fan. Sometimes you can hook them to your ceiling box as you wire them. If not, you may need help. Be sure that you follow the instructions that come with the fan. Next, take the cover off the wall switch. Are there two black wires going to it? There may be one black and one white. If you have two black wires, it is easy. Power runs from the switch to your light. One black and one white is a bit more complex. Power runs from the ceiling to your switch. It then returns to your light in a loop circuit. You will need to hook these up differently.

Using two black wires

There will be four fan wires. Wire the black and blue fan wires together. Attach them to your black ceiling wire. White goes to white. The green fan wire goes to the bare ground wire. This hookup is easy, but it has drawbacks. When you turn the light off, the fan will also be off.

There will be two black and two white ceiling wires. Make sure you know which goes to the switch and which stay hot. You will need to check them with a tester. Attach the black fan wire to the black ceiling wire.

Next, hook the blue wire to your other black house wire. This one goes to the switch. Then, attach the white wire from the switch to the black wire on the ceiling. It is very important that you understand how electricity works. Attaching a white wire to a black one is not usually advised. Under normal circumstances it would cause a direct short. This is one of the few examples, that you can do this. Always check with someone that has experience in these matters. It can be very dangerous.

Finish the installation. Install all ceiling fan blades. Install the new light kit. Check to make sure everything works.
