Ideally a room containing hardwood furniture (or flooring for that matter) should be kept at a constant humidity using central heating or air conditioning and if possible a dehumidifier.

Sunlight – Prolonged exposure to sunlight can cause the colour of the wood to fade over time, resulting in patchy areas on the furniture where only certain sides are exposed. Sunlight can also damage the finish of the wood causing a “crackled” appearance. If possible, keep your furniture away from direct sunlight. If not possible, ensure furniture is rotated to allow the colour to fade evenly. The colour can then be restored using finishing products.

Cleaning – Cleaning hardwood furniture is simple provided you adhere to one rule: No water! All spills should be cleaned up immediately using a clean dry cloth. For stubborn food spills, use a lightly dampened but not wet cloth. When dusting, again use a clean dry cloth or apply a specially developed furniture polish, avoiding silicone based polishes where possible as these can dry the wood.

Re-finishing – Before re-finishing, make sure to check the original finish of the piece and where possible use the same product to re-finish. For a wax or oil finish, apply once every three to four months following the manufacturer’s instructions. A lacquered or varnished finish will need to be re-applied less frequently. If your furniture is new and has not yet been finished, be sure to apply your own choice of finish to protect the wood.

Moving – Anything placed on top of your furniture can cause scratches or marks. Always use a coaster and move items by lifting, not sliding to minimise scratching. If you need to move a piece of furniture, it is often tempting to slide it along the floor, especially if you’re not moving it far. Avoid sliding the item as it can cause damage to the floor and to the legs of the item. Instead, ensure two people are available to properly lift the item before moving.
