Woodworking has been defined as a process of carving, making, or building of an object using wood as a material. There are three main varieties, or categories, of wood. The first one is called hardwood and it is derived from trees that have broad leaves and a tighter grain. Second there are woods that are produced from a coniferous tree that are named a softwood. Third is a material that is made made such as the common plywood. When a wood worker practices his, or her craft, usually something that is of use, has beauty, or both is created. In order to accomplish that goal though many a person has woodworking plans to follow.

There are a wide variety of plans that are available to fit any skill that a woodworker might have. A beginners plan for example covers every step of the process involved in order to minimize the errors that cause a restarting of a project or the abandonment of it altogether. Thus waste, whether of time, materials, or both, is minimized as a result.

These plans often come with a diagram that details the steps needed to complete the project that has been selected by the woodworker. Thus there is no confusion as to what to do next as the level of detail in a plan usually involves step by step illustrations that takes a craftsman, or woman, from start to finish.

With so many plans available how can a person choose the one that he, or she, desires to accomplish? It is advisable for a beginner to choose something that is not complicated. Such as a simple box or a house for a bird to nest in. On the other hand if one is more experienced then a more elaborate plan can be selected, which may be a toy or a piece of furniture.

One important part of a woodworking plan is the list of tools and materials that is needed to complete the project. That way a woodworker, or a potential one, has an idea of the expense, skill level, and other factors involved. Thus he, or she, will be better able to decide if the project is one that they can take with the abilities they currently have.

Many plans can be found in books, videos, or on the internet. Many web sites have databases of plans for almost any project that someone who wants to work with wood has a longing to build. Also for those who wish to learn more advanced techniques there are classes that are on offer at various schools and colleges.

Good woodworking plans enable a project to be completed efficiently, easily, and with minimal expense. Thus when the project is completed something unique is brought into existence that is both beautiful and functional.
