Painting Your Residence Does Not Have To Be A Dirty Job
Friday, June 11th, 2010For most people, getting their homes painted is often as painful as visiting a dentist. This is because most of us lack the basic understanding about painting and how to get the painting work done. For me, painting my home is a delightful activity because I have collected many details regarding the techniques, products and people in the business and do not fear when the requirement of repainting crops up.
Paint coating act not only as a means to enhance the beauty of a house, but also as a safeguard against the elements of nature like snow, water, light, heat etc. You are fortunate here because now you have several choices to make as far as painting techniques are concerned.
There are six common paint finishes, namely, the matt finish, flat enamel, eggshell finish, satin finish, glossy and semi gloss. Matt finish is great to cover up splits or defacement on the surface while flat enamel finishes are durable and easy to clean. Acrylic finish offers only very low gloss and therefore best suited for halls etc. Satin finish is smooth and velvety and better suited for ceilings, trims, doors and windows. Semi gloss paint is also suited for trims and kitchen cabinets. High gloss consistency reflects light and may look like enamel or plastic.
There are many advantages attached to each of these techniques, but if used in the wrong wall, cabinet or trim, they tend to accentuate the existing flaws. Therefore, you need to evaluate which areas of your home should receive a particular paint before the work starts.
While painting my home, I give particular importance to certain fine points. You should be able to wipe away a product for easy clean-up. It has to be durable too since painting and repainting homes is a cumbersome and expensive endeavor. In children’s rooms, you need to be particular about using kid-friendly paints. Eggshell or satin finishes are best for such walls while semi-gloss paints are best suited for the trims, doors etc. For achieving rustic looks, you can use flat finishes while high gloss finishes should be reserved for special areas. Using latex interior paints and paint paint rollers also can bring about that dramatic look you always wished for your home.
