Why You Should Carry A Personal Defense Tool

Friday, June 11th, 2010

Personal safety is essential for your well being and in today’s society, there just simply is no excuse for compromising your security. What most Americans do not know is the fact there are a number of tools available that you can use to make sure that you are not vulnerable to a violent attack in today’s world with increasing crime trends. Non-lethal self defense weapons such as Personal Defense Spray are designed with the general public’s safety in mind. Although there are some state and local restrictions on their use, most are entirely legal to possess without a license or permit.

Statistics show that since 2007, violent crimes such as kidnapping, burglary and rape have increased. All parts of society are impacted by this unfortunate trend. Real estate workers, students and small business operators are all at elevated risk. An inexpensive investment in simple self defense tools can allow workers and students to maintain their levels of freedom while improving their personal safety.

The advent of non-lethal self defense products allows individuals to avoid purchase of handguns or firearms for personal protection. Situations where a gun is used – even in self defense – nearly always results in long term emotional and mental damage to everyone involved; certainly for the one on the receiving end of the exchange. Innocent victims who have used firearms in self defense frequently endure years of depression and difficulty, not to mention threats of civil and criminal litigation.

There are a variety of non-lethal self defense weapons available on the market today that are as effective as a firearm. Depending on the type of system being used, most people recover from their effects within 45 minutes to an hour. Firearm use creates a potentially different situation.

There are three primary types of non-lethal self defense tools:

Vascular Constrictors: Defense Spray – commonly referred to as pepper spray causes the attacker’s mucous membranes to swell when exposed to the chemical. Swelling causes difficulty with vision and breathing. While immediately debilitating, these chemicals can stop an aggressive action long enough for law enforcement to intervene.

Electronic Control Devices: Commonly known as the TASER(R), electronic control systems deliver significant voltage to the aggressor. This causes the central nervous system to fail immediately. A crime victim can quickly incapacitate an aggressor using a ‘stun gun’ allowing time to get away or summon help. Stun guns generally have a better incapacitation rate than a 9mm handgun.

Pressure Point Control Tools: Pressure point tools require the victim and aggressor to be in close proximity. It also requires training and an understanding of proper pressure point locations where the tool should be applied.

There are many online stores offering legal non-lethal self defense products. Most of these products are well capable of offering you the kind of protection you need depending on you individual needs and abilities.

Unfortunately, most citizens only consider personal safety after being victimized. On the positive side, non-lethal defense products are inexpensive and easy to use. Statistics now show that 40% of women have either been a victim of a violent act or know someone that has been victimized. This trend is not expected to decrease. In the end, each is responsible for her/his own personal safety. Using the best tools available to improve one’s personal safety only makes sense.
