Wednesday, June 9th, 2010

It really doesn’t matter if you business is doing great or if your business is struggling, these free advertising avenues are worth the effort. They will not just get great exposure for your business but will also make you an expert in your field.

Contact your the newspaper editors in your local area about running a column about your expertise. Big city newspapers won’t be as inclined to listen, but small city newspapers are always looking for content. Be sure to let them know how it will benefit THEM, not you. If you happen to live in a big city, don’t worry, there are always smaller independent newspapers that will listen to your ideas.

Submit articles to magazines and hard copy newsletters using the resource box at the end of your article to advertise your business. Tons of people know to submit article online for promotion, but most won’t try the hard copy publications. If you need a list of publications and where to send them you can go to the nearest university library. They have books that list these types of publications and how to contact the editors.

If you put out a hard copy newsletter, consider locating other editors like yourself and exchanging ads. Just be sure that you are not directly competing with each other. There are publications that list hard copy newsletters and yes, they still exist.

Talk to the local radio show producers and ask to be a guest on their show. Look at your local TV stations and do the same. Build a friendly but professional relationship with these producers. Offer them something useful in exchange for a little advertising at the end of your interview. Check back if they aren’t interested right now.

Have the backs of your business envelopes printed with a small ad about your business! Use every space you can find to get the word out.

Trade publications are magazines specific to an industry and are usually published with the goal of helping business owners succeed. With that in mind consider how you might offer quality content to these editors. Don’t just look at your own industry but also industries that compliment what you do. For instance if you grow herbs and know absolutely everything about growing herbs, you might write articles for the herb growing industry but you might also write articles for the chef industry. Most business owners never even think about trade publications as a way to increase their customer base but these magazines can be dynamite for increasing your exposure. Another benefit is that when you are published in the trades it will be much easier to be published in the larger mainstream magazines.
